: : I am trying to track down a Coat of Arms for our family. The furtherest back I can get so far is David Sterritt, born in County, Donegal, Ireland in 1851. Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Kind Regards, Mike Sterritt
: look up(house of names)sterrett, is of scottish origin. the irish 1901 & 1911 census is on line & can be be researched for free. look up (irish roots)(irish family history foundation).
The information you see on House of Names is correct, Sterrett (also spelled Sterritt) is of Scottish origin. The fact that you have a relative by that name who was born in Ireland is also not surprising, especially if you are familiar with the history of Ireland. Starting in the early 17th century, the English crown instituted the Plantation of Ulster, which consisted of the transplantation of loyal Protestant Scots to the province of Ulster (current day Northern Ireland). The plan was intended to "breed" the Irish out of the Irish, but in most cases the end results the Scots became Irish. So your relative is Scottish and Irish.
