Famous Bolands | Boland Screensavers |
The name Boland was originally rendered with a prefix O,
usually as O'Bolan, or O'Beollain. The prefix has been
largely dropped now and the letter D added to the end of
the name.
The name is widely distributed in Ireland where there
were a number of originating clans (septs). The Munster
Bolands hail from the Lough Derg area, County Clare and can
claim lineage to a brother of Brian Boru, the High King
of Ireland. Another sept flourished in Sligo at Doonaltan
and Drumcliff.
Migration to Leinster in particular accounts
for a predominance of decendants still being found in
that province.
1884-1922 Harry Boland was born in Dublin in 1884. He grew up in Clontarf with his brother Gerry and was greatly influenced by his Father James who was involved in the IRB and the GAA. Harry fought in the Easter Rising in 1916 and was interned in Dartmoor Prison. He was released in 1917 and spent much of the next few years assisting DeVelera in America. He returned to Ireland on foot of a summons to vote in the Anglo-Irish Treaty debate which he opposed. He tried to broker a deal between Collins and DeVelera but failed. He fought in the civil war against the Free State government and participated in the rebel occupation of Blessington. On July 31st Harry Boland was shot by Free State soldiers who were attempting to arrest him. There is still a certain mystery surrounding the circumstances of his death as it is unlikely that such a skilled intelligence officer would openly register in the Grand Hotel in Skerries without expecting to be observed. The suspicion still remains that he was set up by government agents. Bolands differences with Collins were in part due to the relationship that both men had with Kitty Kiernan but they were differing politically even before the Treaty was enacted. His death was quickly followed by that of Arthur Griffith and of Michael Collins himself.
