Lady Lavery The painting of Lady Lavery is symbolic because the face of the lady was to adorn the Irish pound note for half a century. The canvas which was begun in 1892 was originally a portrait of Mrs William Burrell. It was transformed in 1912 into a portrait of Sarah Bernhardt, and was for a short time a portrait of Viscountess Curzon. The Irish Government invited Lavery to paint a portrait of his wife so that the image could adorn the new Irish currency. This gesture was a sign of gratitude to the Laverys who had spared their London residence to the Irish delegation in 1921 which secured the Free State Treaty. The Goose Girl by Stanley Royle The Goose Girl painting was originally credited to William Leech and the National Gallery adopted the painting as its logo. The Gallery eventually conceded that the painting was in fact created by Englishman Stanley Royle. Despite this (maybe because of it), this picture is one of the most popular in the Gallery.
