How do I UNZIP files?
Zipped files are files that contain a number of smaller files within them. Generally an UNZIP program is used to unwrap the files onto your PC. You can download an excellent and completely free zip/unzip utility by clicking the link below.
Alternatively, if you are comfortable with working from the DOS prompt then:
- Go to DOS mode click to see how
- Create a new directory where you will do your unzipping: MD C:\UNZIP
- Go into this new directory:
CD C:\ZIP
Save the file that is to be unzipped into this new directory.
If you have already saved it in a different place on your PC then you can copy it from that place to the new directory:
COPY C:\WRONGDIR\NEWFILE.ZIP C:\UNZIP - Click this link pkunzip.exe and save the file to your new directory C:\UNZIP
- You should now have both the ZIP file and the file that does the unzipping in the new directory. You can check this by listing the contents of the directory: DIR C:\UNZIP and it should include both NEWFILE.ZIP and PKUNZIP.EXE (where NEWFILE.ZIP is the file that you are about to unzip)
- Make sure that you are located in the newly created C:\UNZIP director. You can now instruct the PKUNZIP.EXE file to unzip NEWFILE.ZIP:
PKUNZIP NEWFILE
The constituent parts of the zip file will then be unzipped and placed in the same directory that the unzipping was carried out in (C:\UNZIP) - Check the new contents of your directory
DIR C:\UNZIP
Typically there will be a SETUP.EXE or a README.TXT file bundled with the zip file. Open and read the README file in a text editor (such as Notepad in WINDOWS) and then run the SETUP.EXE file to install your new application.
How to I Download a file onto my PC?
Most files that are intended for download will only require you to click on them to begin the download process. Some other files (such as the screensavers on our site) will require you to press a 'Download' button to start the download process.
Some files require you to click the 'other' button on your Mouse. Files such as our History Reports are in text (.txt) and Rich Text (.rtf) formats. If you click on them with the 'usual' Mouse button then the file will be displayed on your PC screen. If you click the 'other' mouse button however, you will be given the option to save the file onto your PC.
Here is an example:
If you click this link with your 'usual' Mouse button then the file will appear on your screen:
Click here with the Mouse button you always use!
But if you click with the 'other' Mouse button then you will be given the option to download the file onto your PC:
Click here with the 'other' Mouse button and then select 'Save Target As' or 'Save Link As'
How to I find a file that I Downloaded onto my PC?
If you know the name of the file that you are looking for,
(for example, if you know that the file name is IrishPubs.exe) then:
- Click the WINDOWS START button on your PC click to see how
- Select FIND and then click FILES OR FOLDERS
- Type IrishPubs.exe
- Click FIND NOW click to see how

How do I find a file that was sent to me as an attachment to an email message?
You can use the same procedures as above but, if you know where the file attachments are usually stored then
- Open the EXPLORER program on your WINDOWS PC
click first to see how
click second to see how
- Click the directory that stores your Email Program click to see how
- Click the directory where the attachments are stored
- Select the required file
The example above demonstrates the retrieval of email attachments using the EUDORA email package. Other email packages will store file attachements in different places and in different ways. Some email services will not allow file attachments of certain sizes to be transported with email messages. AOL and HOTMAIL users should pay particular attention to the way in which attachments are handled by their email service.
The email service JUNO does not allow file attachments to be sent to its free email addresses (yourname@juno.com, annie@juno.com, irishmike@juno.com, etc.), unless you have signed up for their 'Gold' Service.
How do I run a program file that I downloaded?
- Use any of the procedures above to find the file that you want to run.
- Point your mouse pointer onto the file so that it becomes 'highlighted'
- Click the file-name again
Or use this method:
- Click the WINDOWS START button on your PC click to see how
- Click RUN
- Type the location of the file or type C: and click BROWSE
- Click the location of the file and then click OK
Can I install a program directly onto my PC from the web?
Yes, you can if you use the MS Internet Explorer Browser.
- Click the file you want to download (or click the 'download' button)
- You will be presented with 2 options:
- Run this Program from its current location
- Save this Program to disk
- Select the FIRST option and the program will be RUN automatically straight from the web

I installed my Screensaver but it does not appear in the list of Screensavers when I try to select it from the CONTROL PANEL in Windows. Why not?
If you are installing your screensaver on a work PC then you may need to get permission from the Network Manager before s/he allows you to put the files onto your system.
I downloaded the screensaver and it appeared to install correctly but I am getting either nothing appearing on the screen or else strange characters and rubbish appear on my screen - whats going on?
Sometimes file downloads and email message transfers get corrupted over the internet. It does not happen too often but it does sometime happen. The simple solution is to re-download the file or to have it re-emailed to you again. If the problem occurs again then contact the file provider.
What are the 'Recommended Settings' for your Screensavers?
The Screensavers that were created by The Information about Ireland Site have a number of settings that the user can change. These include:
- Transition time: the length of time in seconds before a transition occurs
- Image size: Small, Medium or Large, as they appear on your PC
- Mode: Transition, Floating, Slideshow, etc. This defines what exactly happens to the images that apear as part of the Screensaver
- Transition: There are a number of effects that can be selected

What is the difference between .txt and .rtf file formats?
We provide our Literature Texts, History Reports, Tourist Guide and Genealogy Report in .txt and .rtf formats.
The text format .txt provides the basic information in ASCII format and is compatible with most word processors including MS WORD, MS WORDPAD, etc. You may find that some of these documents are too large to open in NOTEPAD. Click Here to download a great freeware text editor called NOTETAB, (created by Eric G.V. Fookes).
The Rich Text Format .rtf provides the information with some textual embellishments including bold text, italics, etc. This format is particularly suited to MS WORD and other word processors.
How do I listen to Music MIDIs?
MIDI files contain the tunes to songs and can be played through your PC.
- Click the file you want to listen to
- You will be presented with 2 options:
- Run this Program from its current location
- Save this Program to disk
- Select the FIRST option and the program will be RUN automatically
Your PC will use a software program (a 'Player') to play the music to you.
Most PCs come ready equipped with this kind of software. If your PC does not
have a Player then you can get one free by clicking Here
Make sure that your PC Speakers are correctly connected and working.
Make sure that the volume is turned up.
